Pastoral Assistant Position Job Description

Position Summary:

The Pastoral Assistant at St. George is a full-time position.  The successful candidate shall be an Orthodox Christian in good standing who is actively living out his or her faith commitment to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  The Pastoral Assistant will be under the direct supervision of the Pastor.  The Pastoral Assistant will assist the Priest as an extension of his non-liturgical ministry in the parish.  The Pastoral Assistant will be responsible for Youth Ministry in addition to assisting the Parish Priest with Adult and Family Ministry along with any additional responsibilities assigned by the Parish Priest in areas of worship and parish administration.

Qualifications:

  • Orthodox Christian, Theological Degree preferred
  • Possess the interpersonal, spiritual, and administrative skills to excel in the position
  • Possess competent computer literacy including Microsoft Office Suite, web design and maintenance, Social Media and other appropriate media
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; both verbal and written
  • Possess knowledge of Archdiocesan/Diocesan Policies and Procedures and guidelines for Youth Programs
  • Experience working with children of all ages, backgrounds and ethnicity
  • Ability to relate to Parishioners of all ages
  • Ability to discern when information or issues should be brought to the Parish Priest

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a leadership role for all the Parish Youth Ministries, various Adult Programs, Internet Initiatives, and other duties as assigned, assuring all materials, supplies, and identification of Volunteers are in place. This includes coordination of training sessions for volunteers and teachers in these ministries.
  • Provide guidance in order to meet Archdiocesan requirements for all Youth Programs.  Establish and formulate Church School planning and curriculum as approved by the Archdiocese. Assure a comprehensive youth ministry taking into consideration the spiritual, physical, recreational, social and psychological development of youth.
  • Plan and develop annual/monthly/weekly schedules for the various Youth Ministries and Adult Programs communicating these events and other important information through the use of Parish Bulletins, e-mail, Parish Web Site, Social Media and other standard forms of communication as available.
  • Submit required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Avail to youth special programs of spiritual growth and fellowship through camps, retreats, meetings, outreach programs, visitation and parish gatherings.
  • Direct and participate in the Church Sunday School Program and oversee the Sunday School Superintendent.
  • At direction of Parish Priest, lead or participate in the Adult Church School Class, the Catechism Class and Welcome Program in association with the Hospitality Committee.
  • Coordinate and oversee “Family Night” youth activities.
  • Provide regular training sessions for teachers and volunteers.
  • Schedule regular meetings with the Youth and Adult Ministry Team to identify and recruit potential volunteers, review programs and develop strategies and plans to provide continuous improvement to all Youth and Adult Programs.
  • Develop and publish weekly/monthly/yearly calendar of all youth events.
  • Maintain contact with students and parents, keeping them informed of ongoing activities.  Keep parents updated on ministry strategies and plans in a way that encourages partnership and involvement.
  • Be proficient on how to identify teen issues, including but not limited to: suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, effects of family issues (such as death, divorce, etc.), depression, drug or alcohol abuse, and practicing abstinence. Notify Parish Priest if Pastoral Assistant determines intervention is needed.
  • Educate and/or avail to training to understand different personality types in order to effectively manage youth programs.  Recognize that each youth has his or her own ways of participating in activities and be aware of their needs to determine the best way to encourage the youth in the various available programs.  Do not expect that all children are motivated in the same way.  Identify ways to engage children while being sensitive to their needs.
  • Attend all Parish Worship Services, its fellowships and events, Youth Events and Outings, and get involved with any aspect of Parish Administration required by the Parish Priest.
  • At the direction of the Parish Priest, the Pastoral Assistant may deliver sermons, write articles, assist with visitation and outreach, chant and administer other duties.
  • Attend Youth Minister/Pastoral Assistant seminars and retreats as requested.
  • Participate in continuous development and maintenance of Parish Web Site.
  • Weekly meetings with Parish Priest to report on all activities and programs.
  • Meet quarterly with all Youth Program and Educational Ministry Staff.
  • Respects confidentiality of information about employees and church members; only shares this information in accordance with church policies.
  • Attend and report at meetings of the Parish Council.
  • Work with the Ways and Means Committee to present a budget for youth ministry.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary by Parish Priest.
