Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Job Description

Mission: The primary mission of The Director of the Youth and Young Adult Ministries is to connect with the young people of our parish and lead them to engage in the fullness of the faith and the active life of the Orthodox Christian Church.  We are seeking someone who is passionate about Youth and Young Adult ministry, who has strong interpersonal and team-building skills, and whose own life serves as an example of what it means to live out one’s faith as an Orthodox Christian.


Description: TheDirector of Youth and Young Adult Ministries is responsible for the implementation, development, and evaluation of all non-liturgical programs and activities of the youth and young adults in the parish.  This work will be done under the direction of the Parish Priest, and in coordination with and assistance from a team of advisors to these groups. This person will work collaboratively to create a long term vision for the Youth and Young Adults of St. Michael.


Job Requirements



  1. Baptised, Orthodox Christian in good standing.

  2. Four-year college degree and 2-3 years of youth work experience preferred.

  3. Excellent leadership, administrative, time management and interpersonal/communication skills.

  4. Background in education and an understanding of child development desirable.

  5. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and email and social media communications (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

  6. Willingness to submit to a background check.

Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):


Leadership Team Development:


  1. Serve as director of Teen SOYO, building it into an inspiring program for our youth.

  2. Recruit, oversee and direct advisors for the following YAYA ministries:

    1. Pre-Teen

    2. Teen

    3. College

    4. Young Adult

  3. Work with the Church School Superintendent to develop, plan, and coordinate all aspects of our parish Church School (including Sunday Church School, Vacation Church School, and the Lazarus Saturday and St. Nicholas Retreats).

  4. Recruit, oversee and direct a Parish volunteer to organize the monthly Community Fellowship Nights, and direct the youth portions of this event.

  5. Recruit, oversee and support a Parish volunteer to plan and organize youth, young adult and parish wide missionary work.




  1. Establish and help plan regular fellowship and/or service opportunities for pre-teens, elementary and preschool children, young adults, and their families.

  2. Organize participation in Teen SOYO, OCF, and YAM programs, including area, Diocesan, and Archdiocesan retreats, conventions, etc.

  3. Facilitate opportunities for our youth and young adults to engage with other local Orthodox Christians, seeking opportunities for fellowship, service, worship, and the sharing of ideas.

  4. Facilitate opportunities for our youth and young adults to engage in discussions of relevant, current issues for spiritual enrichment.

  5. Facilitate and direct all aspects of our parish camp program, including family camp, summer camp, and Village at Home.

  6. Reach out to active, inactive, and prospective young people and their families about Parish opportunities and ministries, as well as personally, especially remembering times of celebration and crisis.


Administration and Training


  1. Perform all duties in accordance with the Parish Employee Handbook.

  2. Ensure that proper documentation (i.e. permission slips, healthy records, and insurance information) is acquired and maintained for all young people participating in trips and programs.

  3. Develop and maintain a Parent/Youth Code of Conduct.

  4. Develop and maintain an annual chronicle (i.e. digital photo album/scrapbook) of YAYA programs.

  5. Develop and maintain resource sections of the library and bookstore that focus on issues pertaining to Orthodox youth and young adults, as well as to their parents, teachers, and advisors.

  6. Coordinate with appropriate advisors, as well as the church treasurer,  to prepare and manage the various YAYA Ministries budgets.

  7. Keep abreast of, participate in, and share with fellow YAYA advisors: training opportunities, resources, publications, and programs.

  8. Coordinate appropriate chaperones for youth events, with approval of the parish priest. Procure background checks as required by the Parish Sexual Misconduct Policy.

  9. Recruit and provide initial and ongoing training for YAYA advisors and educators within the parish.

  10. Except in times of concern for potential harm to self or others, confidentiality will be maintained at all times.


Reporting Structure and Work Function:


  1. Report directly to the Parish Priest on all spiritual matters and program development.

  2. Meet with the Parish Priest and Office Manager weekly to discuss and coordinate activities/programs.

  3. Prepare bi-monthly written reports to present at Parish Council meetings.

  4. Prepare a written report to present at the General Assembly annually.

  5. Meet regularly with the YAYA advisors in the parish to promote cohesion across all programs.

  6. Meet quarterly with the Selection Committee to share successes, challenges, progress, and concerns.

  7. Develop and maintain the YAYA ministry event calendar, in conjunction with the overall parish calendar.

  8. Maintain active and timely lines of communication with the youth, young adults, their parents, and the parish in general through periodic newsletters, bulletin inserts, social media, phone/texts, email, and most importantly, through one-on-one contact with young people and other parishioners.

  9. For YAYA events, help with planning, setup, supplies, materials, and clean up.

  10. Willingness to work non-traditional, flexible hours based on programming needs:

      1. A minimum of 40 hours will be required.

      2. Office hours: M, W, F 9am-12pm; T, Th 3pm-6pm.

      3. Evening and weekend availability required.



Salary and Benefit Package


  1. Starting annual salary of $40,000.

  2. Health, dental and vision insurance.

  3. Annual review with potential cost of living and performance based raises.

  4. Two (2) weeks, approved, paid vacation annually.

  5. Opportunity for continuing education and personal retreat time, separate from vacation time, as approved by the Parish Priest.
