Job Description

A Greek Orthodox Chanter/Pastoral Assistant is needed for Saint George Greek Orthodox Church (300 families) located in the high desert city of Albuquerque, NM.  Our Chanter (trained at Holy Cross, leading us in the eight modes of Byzantine Music) is retiring and we are seeking a Chanter/Pastoral Assistant who can collaborate to create his/her own position within the community. This is a full-time position.


Saint George Greek Orthodox Church was established in 1948. Father Conan Gill, our proistamenos of 7 years, and Father Deacon George Collaros of 30 years, make up our Clergy team. You will be working with a culturally diverse community which includes families of various origins. Our youth are engaged and attentive. Chanting is important to our community and is in both English and Greek.

Requirements include: Chant Certificate is preferred but not required, interest as a pastoral assistant, Youth ministry, participation in the sacrament of Confession, able to design and implement a curriculum with the proistamenos that serves the community and its families.

Pay is commensurate with experience. Travel for Diocesan and Archdiocesan events in included.

Albuquerque New Mexico is located on the western slopes of the Sandia Mountains. It is a culturally diverse community with a selection of excellent schools. It is known for its parks, bicycle paths, and open space including the Sandia National Park. Athletes come from all over the world to train for marathon, ultra marathon, mixed martial arts, and bicycling.  The region has a mild version of all four seasons and averages 300 plus days of sunshine. From atop of Sandia Mountain, a 30 minute drive from downtown, you can see 70 plus miles in all directions. The longest commute from one end of town to the other is usually 30 minutes or less. The community is economically stable with Sandia National Labs and Kirtland Air Force Base employing over 30,000 people. New Mexico boasts the most PHD's per captia and best restaurants per capita over any other state. Santa Fe is 50 minutes to the north and Taos Ski Resort is just 2.5 hours away. Albuquerque International Airport is easy to get in and out of and is serviced by all of the major airlines including Southwest Air. The cities of Denver and Phoenix are one hour flights. LA and San Diego and Dallas are two hour flights. Chicago, Baltimore and Tampa are 3-4 hour flights. The University of New Mexico is located 10 minutes from the church.

If you love Chanting, teaching chanting, mentoring and supporting the development of young Orthodox Christians, then this position is for you.
