Job Description

Background

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church serves the Greater Buffalo area for over 100 years. It consists of 600 families and has an active presence among the Orthodox Christian population and beyond. Our administrative and worship center is located in the city of Buffalo around our beautiful church of the Annunciation. Over a number of years the church has pursued the vision of creating an additional center in the eastern suburbs of Buffalo in order to strengthen the connection with our families who primarily live outside the city of Buffalo. A parcel of 30 acres was purchased in Lancaster NY. Construction of the Family Life Center started in the summer of 2016 and the opening of the center is anticipated in September 2018. The center, which consists of over 15,000 sq feet, includes a chapel, banquet hall, library, youth room, kitchen, offices etc.

Job description

The Director of the FLC under the guidance of the proistamenos of the parish will provide support and continuity to existing programs and facilitate the growth of future Parish programs with a particular emphasis on youth related activities. Although the Director’s primary focus will be the programs at the FLC, at times the Director will assist in programs at the downtown center, especially on Sundays.

Qualifications and Required Skills:

At a minimum, the Director/Pastoral Assistant needs to demonstrate the following:

  • A member in good standing and active in the liturgical life of an Orthodox Christian Church Parish. Knowledgeable about the beliefs, and practices of the Church preferred.
  • A sense of calling to Church and youth ministry.
  • Ability to lead and engage youth with age appropriate topics.
  • Ability to plan, organize, lead and guide complex projects and spontaneous activities related to Parish activities and youth ministries.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create and sustain excellent working relationships with other staff members and develop a support team of volunteers made up of team players.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to plan, organize, direct, and manage multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, including word processing and electronic communication software.
  • Able to keep confidential sensitive communications with Parish Clergy and Parish Council.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field from accredited university or college, or equivalent combination of education and youth work experience preferred. Master’s Degree in Divinity or Theology from an accredited Orthodox Seminary is desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to Parish Clergy, Parish Council, group and ministry leaders.
  • Assist the Proistamenos as an extension of his non-liturgical ministry in the Parish.
  • Assist Parish Priest in planning a weekly schedule of activities at theFamily Life Center for all ministries of the Parish.
  • Assist Parish Clergy to promote an active liturgical life, service projects and events of the Parish and local community.
  • Assist Parish Clergy in the creation, implementation, organization, and execution of the various ministries that include but are not limited to: HOPE, JOY, GOYA, YAL, and OCF programs.
  • Oversee the operation of all youth-related programs.
  • Keep current the master/annual calendar of all Parish events, meetings and activities.
  • Establish event planning checklist and procedures for Church activities.
  • Maintain and expand regular communication with parishioners through weekly and monthly bulletins, email, website, social media, and personal contact.
  • Maintain a database of all past activities and the accompanying planning checklists for future reference.
  • Cultivate, recruit, and train parishioners to serve as youth workers.
  • Establish a volunteer database and assist group leaders with the orientation and training of volunteers for various programs and ministries.
  • Ensure the proper documentation is acquired and maintained for all young people participating in trips and programs.
  • Assist the Parish Clergy, Parish Council Treasurer and the Parish Finance Committee with preparing the youth budget and annual goals for the youth ministry.
  • Maintain a youth worker resource library.
  • Participate in Metropolitan or Archdiocesan retreats, conventions, etc.
  • Keep abreast of, participate in, and share with youth workers: training opportunities, resources, publications, and programs available through the Metropolis and Archdiocese and other relevant sources.
  • Assist the Clergy in the planning and execution of the vacation bible school.
  • Develop and implement additional youth programs with approval of Clergy.
  • Recruit parents and appropriate adults to serve as chaperones and as youth workers with the approval of the Parish Clergy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Attend Parish worship services, its fellowships and events, its youth events and outings, and any aspect of Parish Administration required by the Proistamenos.

Reporting Structure: The Director/Pastoral Assistant reports directly to the Proistamenos on all spiritual matters and program development.

  • Meet with Parish Clergy before and after all youth activities/programs as well as providing regular reports and updates regarding the progress and impacts of the programs.
  • Provide monthly written reports to the Parish Council and attend Parish Council meetings as requested.
  • Written report and presentation to the General Assembly at least annually.
  • Work with and meet regularly with Parish Clergy, the Parish youth ministry team and any youth advisory groups to promote cohesion and coordination in all aspects of youth ministry.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Full-Time Position.
  • $40,000 yearly salary.
