Pastoral Assistant/Youth Director

St. Mark Antiochian Orthodox church in Irvine, California is seeking a full-time Pastoral Assistant/Youth Director. St. Mark is made up of a diverse community of Orthodox Christians whose sole purpose is salvation in Jesus Christ. We seek to do His will and conform our lives to His in every way. Therefore, we constantly seek to fulfill the two great commandments He has given us: to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our mind, with all our soul and with all our strength; and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30, Matthew 22:36-39, Luke 10:27).

The Pastoral Assistant must be an Orthodox Christian in good standing who is actively living out his or her faith commitment to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. They will be under the direct supervision of the Parish Priest whom they will assist as an extension of his ministry to the parish.

The Pastoral Assistant will serve as the primary chanter for Sundays, weekday services, and sacraments. Additionally, they will assist the Priest with the various outreach ministries of the Parish. The Pastoral Assistant’s primary focus will be on our youth.  Along with assisting with pastoral duties, the Pastoral Assistant will take the role of Parish Youth Director. 

Salary is to be determined based on qualifications.

Qualifications:

  • Orthodox Christian, Theological Degree preferred
  • Be well-versed in Byzantine liturgical music and be able to serve as the primary chanter
  • Possess ability to be an engaging teacher, with a strong Biblical and theological background founded on the Orthodox faith
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; both verbal and written
  • Experience working with children of all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities
  • Ability to relate to Parishioners of all ages
  • Possess good listening skills
  • Ability to discern when information or issues should be brought to the Parish Priest
  • Possess ability to identify own limitations, to set boundaries, and to know when to seek counsel or direction from Priest and Parish Council
  • Ability to plan ministry programs and events for youth and young adults
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task, and have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Possess ability to plan and carry out short-term and long-term goals
