Protopsaltis

The Protopsaltis / προτοψάλτης must be an Orthodox Christian in good standing who is actively living out his or her faith commitment to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. They will be under the direct supervision of the Parish Priest whom they will assist as an extension of his ministry to the parish.

The Protopsaltis will serve as the primary chanter for Sundays, weekday services, and sacraments. Additionally, they will assist the Priest with the various outreach ministries of the Parish along with any additional responsibilities assigned by the Parish Priest in areas of worship and parish administration.

The Pastoral Assistant shall follow Parish Ministry Guidelines for each ministry as provided by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the Metropolis of New Jersey, and Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church.

Qualifications:

  • Orthodox Christian, Theological Degree preferred
  • Orthodox Christian, Theological Degree preferred but not required
  • Be well-versed in Byzantine liturgical music and be able to serve as the primary chanter
  • Possess ability to be an engaging teacher of Byzantine chant, with a strong Biblical and theological background founded on the Orthodox faith
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; both verbal and written.
  • Able to chant in both Greek and English
  • Possess good listening skills
  • Ability to discern when information or issues should be brought to the Parish Priest
  • Possess ability to identify own limitations, to set boundaries, and to know when to seek counsel or direction from Priest and Parish Council
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task, and have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Must be a US Citizen, or possess qualified permanent US worker status (Green Card, etc).

Salary: $50,000; benefits $9,000 per year.
